My Students

What if you couldn't find the words needed to communicate your needs and wants? Or what if you did not have the ability to speak at all? Perhaps you're a person who needs something more to spark your interest or link yourself to ideas like adding and spelling.

My class, which is at a public separate school, includes nine students who have a variety of disabilities.

This is an elementary class of third and fourth graders. They are a joy to interact with everyday in class. Three students have a primary or secondary diagnosis of Autism. Some students have a diagnosis of Intellectually Disabled Moderate, while others have a diagnosis of Intellectually Disabled Severe. Another student has a Multiple Disabilities diagnosis. One student has Hunter Syndrome, which greatly affects his joints throughout the day. Hunter Syndrome also affects the organs and can lead to death before or in the early teenage years. Some of the students require constant care and attention throughout the school day. Each of these students enjoy using technology like Smart Boards and iPads in the classroom on a daily basis.

My Project

We have used an Apple iPad in the classroom this year. The applications available for the iPad are phenomenal for the communication and learning process of any child. Some students have difficulty communicating and learning the words that they need to communicate in their everyday life. The iPad helps our students learn valuable vocabulary, as well as how to communicate when speaking is not an option, or the best option. My students also have challenges in learning numbers, letters, how to add or subtract, and so on. This technology gives my students an opportunity to not only learn academics, but also other skills that are vital to their lives as they grow and succeed. Our students enjoy using the iPad everyday to help illustrate what we are learning and the ideas that each of them need to communicate.

The Apple iPad makes a difference everyday in the lives of students with learning difficulties or disabilities.

The impact of having this technology available for my students is immeasurable. It not only improves a student's ability to score higher on tests, it also gives access to ways of communicating that is not available to students unless they are able to have such technology in their own hands.
