This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the 7th and 8th grade mathematics teacher in a high need community in a public school. Over 90% of the school population is of low-income. Over 80% of the students attending are of Latino background. The school has a small budget for supplies but we are a resourceful staff and strive to give our students best quality teaching.
As mentioned before, over 90% of the student population at my school are from low-income homes and receive free lunch status. This means that 90% of the 7th and 8th grade students I instruct cannot buy their own graphing calculator. School funds are low and unfortunately calculators are not priority in the school budget. In the past I have used my own calculator and passed it around to over 30 students, but there are limitations to this strategy.
Using these graphing calculators in small groups will allow students to experience technology in a mathematics classroom. Far beyond a regular calculator, the graphing calculator will allow students to visualize equations and make comparisons of real world situations.
Your help will ensure that my students receive the opportunity to apply their knowledge of real world situations using the latest technology. They will enter high school with the experience and will apply their knowledge for years to come.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
