My students need a classroom set of TI-83 plus graphing calculators and a way to store it in the classroom in order to fully participate in the Pre-Calculus curriculum.

My Students

It is 2010 and my students live in a very technologically advanced world. It is imperative that they have the tools they need to be successful in math. For Pre-Calculus, they need a graphing calculator and a lack of technology in our school should not be holding them back!

My students attend an inner city Massachusetts public school that focuses on student leadership.

Each year, I tell my students that graphing calculators are a requirement for the class, but many students simply cannot afford such an expensive item. So each year I always find myself asking those few students with calculators to share, but the reality is that they each need their own calculator in order to fully participate in the work we are doing. It is nearly impossible, for 3 students gathered around a screen the size of a post-it to fully benefit from what they are seeing.

My Project

The TI-83 plus graphing calculators allow students to explore the various functions we study in Pre-Calculus. They are also able to enter and analyze data in these calculators. Each year, I do a project, in which, students look at data and determine what regression line best fits the data. The calculator allows them to explore all the different options and figure out this information on their own. I also attended a course this summer and received a great deal of material and projects to do with high school students. Many of these projects are calculator based and I will not be able to implement them if my students don't have calculators. I found that most of the other teachers attending this course had classroom sets so I decided that I would do my best to get this for my students.

Our school has very little technology and it would be so great if I could plan lessons that are calculator based and not have to worry about my students not having what they need.

It seems that Pre-Calculus students should really know how to use a graphing calculator before they get to AP Calculus and this is my chance to help them get ahead in this arena.
