My Students

We got the car, now we need the engine! Trying to hook up an old desktop computer to a new projector is tough.

These students are some of the hardest workers I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.

The amazing part of that statement is that they do so in very adverse conditions. They go to school in an urban setting in MA. It is a very impoverished neighborhood. We are a 96% free and/or reduced lunch school, which should give you some idea of the demographic. Most of my students struggle just to get their basic needs met, let alone having the advanced technology it would take to place them in the driver's seat of our modern world. It is their desire to get better that keeps the candle lit in my heart every day I walk into their classroom.

My Project

The laptop that we are asking for is a Macbook. This computer will lead to projects my students have only dreamed of being able to accomplish. Instead of a PowerPoint, they can create a movie slide show, with music! Instead of just reading and studying a poem, they can create their tune in garage band to bring it to life. We have a beautiful projector, which the generous donors of this site helped to provide, and now need this laptop to bring the world into the classroom. With the built in webcam, I would be able to Skype my friend in china, who's class is doing a pen pal program with mine. Imagine being in school and being able to chat with your pen pals thousands of miles away. To be able to experience their culture, and them yours? The possibilities for our class would be endless with this technology.

My students are thirsty for knowledge.

Many of them will not be able to experience traveling the world. We can help bring the world to them. With this technology, we can go above and beyond the tradition classroom to give my students a real advantage in the "real world," which for many of them, would be the first advantage they ever had.
