Technology, Music, Improvisation: Growing Minds For The Future!

My students need 6 keyboards, we are starting small to incorporate improvisation, composition and technology in grades k-8 Music!

My Students

Kids are the future and their creativity is an untapped resource! I want to empower my k-8 students to improvise and compose music using technology to enforce musical literacy. Arts education is vital and I am passionate about keeping it strong in our community!

To better serve our students, arts educators need to revamp our curriculum goals in the same way that mathematics educators are now refocusing energy towards patient problem solving and estimation skills.

Kids are growing up in an impatient, immediate gratification society and to keep up with this pace, we are going to need to keep current too. Having basic keyboard literacy will help my singers develop fine motor skills and practical musicianship through ear training. Midi controllers enable students to change tambor and customize sounds in such a way that gives them freedom to explore through composition. Students will, with this equipment, be able to save their work and publish it. As a teacher, I will be able to quantify their learning and assess them electronically as well. Allowing the musical learning to follow the student from the classroom to their ipod opens up opportunities for the expansion of this school's musical program and the musical palate of our students.

My Project

What foreign language have you studied successfully where the emphasis on reading far outweighs the emphasis on writing or speaking? This is the current status quo for music literacy education in America. The musical language is meant to be written, spoken conversationally, and shared with others. The element of improvisation has been thrown out of the mix with the negative perception of a musician "playing by ear." If I am able to use melodic instruments such as keyboards or other pitched instruments with students, they will be able to answer my musical questions using musical ideas. The spark of this exchange is the beginning of authentic language acquisition for music students. Kids will learn what the pros know by studying basic music theory and remembering their innate musicality. Together, we'll create tangible recordings...without using auto-tune!

With these keyboards, we are starting small to incorporate improvisation, composition and technology in grades k-8 Music! Students who make music will be energized to learn and create simultaneously. The positive effects of this style of differentiated learning will affect the developing child even beyond the music classroom. These small midi controllers will surely inspire a big appetite for exploration!
