Hi, I am a 9th grade math teacher at Cobble Hill School in Brooklyn. I am a second year teacher and have been trying to infuse technology into my lessons in order to better prepare my students for their future. For example, we often use Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculators in class along with the overhead calculator to learn new things. Students enjoy using the overhead calculator adapter to demonstrate to the class the things they have learned such as graphing equations among others. The dilemma I am facing is one of class size versus computer lab size. The school has two computer labs. One has 30 PC\'s and the other has 20. My classes are each too big to make use of the small lab and as you can imagine, the larger lab is often booked with other classes 3 weeks in advance. Now, this may seem like a surmountable obstacle, however, when teaching mathematics to 9th graders, one must be flexible, and while I am, the lab schedule is not. Signing up a month in advance is impractical due to the possible changes in the lesson pace. My solution is simple. I would love to be able to use my personal laptop to demonstrate business applications. The ability to attach the laptop to a projector and allow the students to view the applications and the exercises that we are working on would greatly improve their learning experience. Having worked in the business world for nearly 9 years before I became a New York Teaching Fellow, I understand the benefits of learning how to use technology. In addition, new technology keeps students enthusiastic and interested in the current lessons, and rather than hand them screen shots printed on paper, they could follow along with the actual application.
