My students need tablets, the Olympus voice recorder, and the AVID listening center so that they can record themselves telling their creative stories or reading books. This will help to improve their expressive language and build confidence.

My Students
I am teaching Pre K in a NYC public school. I have 13 students and I am trying to help foster my students' expressive language and reading skills. For many, this is their first school experience and it is the perfect opportunity to not only encourage my students to read books and talk about them, but also to help them build their confidence as speakers, listeners, learners, and explorers. This will be accomplished by having the students continue to listen to books being read but also having them record themselves reading the books. How amazing would it be to listen to your friend or yourself read a book! This will encourage even the shyest student to be brave and speak about books or record their own creative stories! I want to instill a love of learning and risk-taking that will last each of them a lifetime!
My Project
This is my first year teaching Pre-K but my 15th year teaching. When I taught Kindergarten, it was apparent that the gap between these grades was tremendous. I want to bridge the gap by helping my students with their expressive language and confidence.
I want to create a new and child-focused center in my classroom.
I not only want my students to listen to books being read to them on the CD player or they follow along on the tablets. But I want it to become more personal. This will be accomplished by using the Olympus voice recorder where the students will read books into it or tell their own creative stories. They can listen to their own stories or the stories of their friends. My hope is that this will help to improve their expressive language and build confidence at the same time. In addition, it will continue to build on their love of learning and reading. This will be motivating and educational for all of my students from my most outgoing, to my ELL students, and my shyer students.
The keyboard is child-friendly and my hope is that each child will become familiar with it. This is their future and if they are comfortable with the layout of the keyboard it will help them their entire life. In addition, it will help with fine motor skills that are so important and a tremendous emphasis at this age level.
My school invites parents in once a month. What amazing treat it would be if each parent could listen to their child read a book on a recording. This will also foster the home-school connection and encourage each parent to continue to read with their child every night.
