Technology in the Hands of the Future

My students need 2 tablets to encourage reading/inferencing skills, become more proficient with math, and as a tool to enhance our science and social studies curriculum.

My Students

Each year my challenge is to find the key to spark each student's desire to learn whether it is through math, fiction, non-fiction, writing, science, or social studies. Through this spark I hope to ignite a fire that turns students into life-long learners.

My students are 5th graders attending a low income intermediate school in Connecticut.

They come from all areas of town, mostly from an urban setting and many of them qualify for free/reduced lunch price. School offers the consistency and success that they so desire in their lives. Our school is full of wonderful students and dedicated teachers, but our resources are very few. Children learn by doing, but in a high poverty school, they often lack enriching experiences unless we provide them. They are hard workers, and are always happy with what they have, but I would love to give them more!

My Project

I am requesting two Insignia Flex tablets for our classroom. We have two older desktop computers and often find ourselves all huddling around it to look up information. In this ever changing world, my students are at a disadvantage when they are unable to explore, discover and learn using technology. Struggling readers would be able to build their confidence by listening to stories being read or practice math facts that are key to developing understanding. With these tablets, the students will have the chance to explore other topics, film and photograph classroom events or even record themselves reading their favorite book! The opportunities for these students would be endless.

These tablets will add to the engaging and technology driven classroom that I strive to provide for students that will not get any experience with these technologies or programs at home.
