This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Reading Intervention Groups are created by below grade level readers. I have eight different groups that I see daily. Every time I meet them, we start our session with a big smile and a "we can do it"!! My goal is to have 100% of my students reading proficiently by the end of the year.

My students love coming to school because they are guaranteed a free breakfast/lunch, warmth and protection, access to books, and caring teachers.

I teach at a Title 1 school where most of the students are English Language Learners and have little to no access to the English language at home. They have a lot of needs!

My Project

My plan is to use the iPad with a protective case in a variety of ways. Most importantly, to use it as an interactive intervention activity for students to practice reading strategies. There are so many apps that are very exciting to children where they can learn basic skills. For instance, there is a free app called ABC Write where students can trace alphabet letters with the pad of their finger and hear the letter names and sounds. This is a very sensory activity. Using a touch screen is appropriate for young learners who have limited technology exposure. Many young learners experience difficulty manipulating a mouse with a computer. Another activity is to have students view books and videos that reinforce things that we are learning. If we are studying the author Eric Carle, for example, the students can listen to him read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." This project will provide my students an opportunity to increase their learning by exploring and using technology.

By helping fund this project, you are helping boost my students' self esteem and confidence in their abilities.

I am hoping that all of my students' reading levels and English skills will improve to help give them the life skills they need. It will make a huge difference in their lives. Thank you so much!
