This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow," John Dewey said, and I believe technology is helping us give our children a better tomorrow.

My transitional kindergarten students are young kindergarteners.

These children are being given the gift of time. They are the children who were born after September 1, 2006 and before December 1, 2006 and also students outside this birthday range who need extra time to transition into school life for better success. Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking. Most of my class does not speak English, but they are so willing to learn! Gang violence has also been on the rise in the last year and it has hit too close to home. In February 2011 some of our students witnessed a shooting just across the street from the playground. On top of that there is major health issues with the oil refineries nearby. Even amidst the poverty, health concerns and lack of safety in our area, my transitional kinder students are so excited to be discovering new things and learning new ideas. They are seeing that learning can be fun!

My Project

Recently when I was out grocery shopping I saw a toddler, in the seat of the cart, playing and manipulating his mom's iPhone without her prompting. He was totally engaged! I want for my students to have that experience. This laptop will open up a new world of learning! I can have them working independently with online reading activities and mac educational apps. We can work together in small groups to create presentations and intensive educational support. I want them to be able to compete with their peers of higher socioeconomic status and have the background knowledge in technology that will be so extremely important for their "tomorrow".

My hope with this laptop is that my students will feel confident and successful with current technology, so that as they grow they are not afraid to try new things in technology, which will lead to expanding their knowledge in other subject areas as well.

In these educational times, technology is leading the way and I don't want them to be the "child left behind". They WILL lead the way!
