My Students

Hey grown-up, when was the last time you asked a young person to update your phone to the new iOS or find that one website your friend posted a link to? Well I'm 24 and that is my whole life with five-year olds. My kids know more about technology that I ever will and constantly keep me on my toes!

In our first year together, my six munchkins and I grew TREMENDOUSLY as students, teammates and humans.

Five kindergarteners and one first grader may seem very manageable, but they all put me through the ringer. Each one of my kiddos has an autism diagnosis, but that really doesn't mean much when you meet them. They are the happiest kids I've ever met, with the most amazing families in the world. The interests in our class range from normal kid stuff like Finding Nemo to just plain weird like Airborne commercials (yeah the cold medicine). But the one thing they all have in common is a love, interest and finesse with technology.

My Project

My students need an Apple iPad tablet and a Microsoft Surface 3 with Keyboard and Stylus for a variety of academic and social needs. They are already familiar with a number of apps like Endless Alphabet and MyPlayHouse. My students learn best with visual input. They gravitate towards videos, interactive apps and typing their assignments. We have a number of apps that we already love like Starfall, Endless Alphabet and Drive About Number Neighborhood. The kids are much more motivated to share, take turns, use oral language and truly interact when put in front of a screen... basically the opposite of everything my mother told me I would do. When the tablets are projected onto the whiteboard (on our affectionately labeled DUMBboard), we are able to sing education songs like Usher's ABCs, The Big Number Song and Left and Right Robot and do class based exercises like yoga and dancing.

Our classroom currently has NO technology provided by the district.

My poor 5 year old beat up iPad is passed around by six 6-year-olds and is on its last limb. The school does not have any room in the budget for new computers or tablets, especially not for a class that "only has six kids." Unfortunately we are a school where we do not receive extensive grants from the state but we do not have the immediate community support to purchase new technology through traditional fundraising means.
