Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students thrive through access to technology! Our school district recently set-up wireless internet for each classroom. And then- they took our desktop computers away. Now we are left without a single computer.

My twenty-four first grade students attend a public school in California that serves a low income, high need community of mostly English Language Learners.

95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. The school's mission is focused on closing the achievement gap and giving all students an equal opportunity to attend college and pursue their dreams. They are curious, caring, and work hard to "make college a reality." They are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, researchers, performers, musicians, and community helpers. They work to overcome obstacles every day. These six and seven year olds love to learn new things through exploration and discovery. When asked if they want to challenge themselves, the answer is always yes. They love to ask questions and absorb the answers. They look forward to listening to and reading books from an online differentiated program called Raz-Kids. They get excited to solve tricky problems in math.

My Project

My students receive 30 minutes a week in the computer lab. I want my students to be able to learn not only from textbooks or completing a worksheet, but also with a simple touch of a screen throughout the day. A small group of students will be able to use these 6 requested iPads in literacy or math centers. Teams of students will be able to share one at each table. With the VGA adapter, I will be able to connect an iPad to my projector to make for more engaging whole group lessons. With these iPads, they will be able to access hundreds of books, solve problems through trial and error, create art, receive informative feedback, publish their writing, and apply what they learn from a lesson. With these tablets, we can activate all of these resources without taking up a lot of space. They will be easy to set up so kids will get to use them immediately.

In the year 2014, all students should have access to technology.

It shouldn't be an option for only some students. I still haven't received a response from the district about replacing our classroom computers, but my students should not have to wait. Your donation through Donors Choose will help engage young minds in exploring, creating, and sparking ideas through technology. Thank you!
