Technology For Up-And-Coming 21st Century Learners
My students need four iPads with cases. We need two Bluetooth keyboards to help with keyboarding skills, 2 headphones and a Bluetooth speaker to use the iPads to their fullest.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow's skills today."- Jennifer Fleming
Many of the future jobs that my students will have haven't been invented yet. It is my responsibility as a teacher to transform my students into 21st century learners and prepare them for their future.
My students go to a Title 1 school.
We are a close knit community of teachers and parents who work collaboratively to provide the best learning experience for our students. Most of the families in this community are from low socio-economic backgrounds and receive government assistance. It is not uncommon for these students to live in a household deprived of technology. These students do not have computers, smart phones or tablets to build their 21st century skills. It is my job as their teacher to expose them to as much technology as I can to prepare competent learners with the skills that they need to thrive in the future. The students in my class love any lesson that incorporates technology, no matter the subject. They are instantly engaged and invested in my teaching with the use of technology. Like most children today, they are stimulated by technology and deserve to have the same opportunities to learn in the ways that students do in more affluent areas.
My Project
There are many ways that I can use iPads in the classroom. Students will be able to learn basic computer skills such as internet searching and keyboarding with the help of the bluetooth cases. The mobile device also gives us the power of apps. We can use programs like storia which will read stories to students while they follow along with the words. We can also use scratch which will give students a foundation for learning how to write HTML code. Students will be able to collaborate by taking pictures of their work or making video tutorials and sharing them with each other instantly. Through the use of an iPad, I am not only teaching them reading writing and math, I am giving students the skills they need to become competent and collaborative 21st century learners.
Giving iPads to students in this type of community means giving them the chance to compete in a future competitive market.
It means allowing students to be exposed to technology in ways they have never seen before. It helps me to create a learning environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. This project will allow my students to develop skills that will meet the needs of today's learner in a multitude of ways.
