My Students
Henry Ward Beecher once said, "Victories that are easy are cheap. Those only are worth having which come as the result of hard work". My students work hard each and every day toward those victories that are worth it- they push themselves and are not willing to take the easy way out.
I teach 3 science classes of about thirty 5th graders each day.
They are such eager learners and love to explore and see how science and technology can be applied to their daily lives. They strive for victory in their education. Even with their hard work, my students are from an extremely low-income, urban neighborhood and do not have the opportunities to always achieve these victories as they do not have access to different types of amazing technology that are available in this day and age. They have little to no access to technology in their daily lives as their families are not able to afford them. Also, it isn't always safe to go to the library to utilize the technology and other services they have available there as the area is in constant turmoil. Their circumstances and the neighborhood that they call home unfortunately get in the way of their access to the truly deep and meaningful learning that technology helps to provide, making their victories harder and harder to come by.
My Project
My students need iPad minis and cases to assist in research and further exploration of core curriculum topics that peak their interest. Our textbooks and other non-fiction texts that we have at school often leave my students with a lot of questions and areas where they want to dive deeper and learn past just what the text says. They strive to work hard and achieve victory, but the materials they have access to are limiting and only allow this hard work to go so far. These iPads will allow my students to actually be able to explore their questions and wonderings that come up as we are moving through the curriculum to the fullest extent possible and allow their hard work to bring them to victory. They will use them in small groups here at school where they are in a safe, controlled environment, to research and find answers to things that come up during our learning that they are so eager and curious to explore. This will help foster independence, hard work, and self-drive that are such essential skills to have as my students go through the rest of their lives.
With your donation to this project, you're working not only for a victory in my classroom, but also for victories in the lives of my students.
You are helping to equip them with the means to foster the essential life skills of inquiry, research and exploration. You are also equipping them to take ownership of their learning, a skill that will push them to strive to become life long learners. Our victories won't be easy, but as Beecher said, they will be worth it as they come with our hard work.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
