This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in and inner city TITLE I school. The school is a K-8 school and also has three special education classrooms. My students have a desire to learn and have shown a tremendous interest in such topics as animals, art and books.
During this economy, many resources are being cut. My school has two televisions. As you can imagine, with twenty-one classes utilizing the equipment, it is often unavailable, either because it's broken or being used.
My class needs a television to maintain the interest of my visual learners. Most of my students are highly motivated by educational dvd's and videos!
I have been lucky enough to obtain DVDs about such topics as animals, artists, and authors. My students will benefit by viewing a video that will make a topic come to life on screen. Children learn in different modalities and many of my students are very visual learners. I own an Eric Carle DVD that tells several of his most popular stories, but so far have been unable to show it to the class.
With your generosity, my class will be able to learn by watching television and dvd's. I'd be able to show them the landing or launch of a space shuttle. As another example, we would be able to compare and contrast the book "Where the Wild Things Are" with the movie version, once it's released on DVD. The list goes on and on! I'm able to borrow many educational videos from my public library in all subject areas. Television can be an excellent teaching tool, if used properly. Please allow my class the ability to use a television when they need to!
