My students need laptop computers in order to complete work from their academic classes. Our school does not have the funding to provide our students with updated technology.
My students are on the autism spectrum. These amazing students are working toward gaining a general diploma. Despite their disabilities, they work hard to learn social skills, maintain high academics, and create friendships. All of these areas are difficult for the students because of being on the spectrum. Many students across the country have no support program like ours. Our autism support program services 59 students through study skills classes, direct monitoring, and paraprofessional assistance. These kids spend a great deal of time overcoming the challenges that come with autism. Though it is difficult to handle the noises, smells, sounds, and crowds of a public high school, they work so hard to graduate. We have the only high school autism support program in the middle Georgia area and we graduate over 90% of our students. These kids are simply tremendous!
My Project
Students with autism are attracted to technology. Often they are unable to explain their thoughts and behaviors verbally. These laptop computers would allow our kids to access information for college, complete academic assignments, and build their technology skills for future endeavors. Historically, kids on the autism spectrum live at home after graduation and receive public assistance. It is our goal to empower them to excel in high school and post-secondary school.
These laptops will allow our students to do more than academics.
They can use the technology to complete performance tasks, socialize with other students, explore career/college opportunities, and so much more.
