Technology for Student Scientists

My students need a LCD projector.

I teach 10th grade Chemistry in a high-need community in Maryland. My school is a brand new Transformation school, opened in 2008. Our school focuses on Health Care and Construction. Each student will graduate with certification in either health care or construction. Many of the students are several grade levels behind, but with the dedication of the faculty and staff, we hope to prepare all of our students to do well in college and beyond. Our first graduating class will be in 2012.

Many of my students have not had the resources to use the technology required to succeed in college. The majority of my students do not have access to the Internet at home and are not equipped with basic computer skills. In addition, because of the lack of resources at the school, the students are not learning how to use technology to present information-such as scientific data. Many of the labs involved in chemistry involve sharing data between student scientists. In college, my students will be expected to be able to present their findings to their peers through PowerPoint presentations. They will be unprepared to do this without having the practice in high school.

An LCD projector for my classroom is an essential resource in solving this issue. With an LCD projector, students will be able to create and present their scientific findings to the rest of the class-a skill necessary for success in college. In addition, having an LCD projector will allow me to show several pictures and demonstrations involving chemistry from around the world that are otherwise unavailable to my students.

Your donation toward this project will provide my students with resources they need to be adequately prepared for college. My students are already several grades behind and without the proper resources, they will struggle when they pursue higher education. Many of my students want to go on to become nurses, doctors, lawyers and businessmen. They have very high hopes and dreams, and I want to do all I can to give them the resources to achieve their goal. Your support for this project is providing many students with the tools they need to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. Thank you!
