My students need probes, rulers, scales, thermometers and calipers to collect authentic data in the classroom and reduce barriers to learning Statistics.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology! It is essential in today's world. Unfortunately, some of our students in urban school districts do not have regular access to technology. I want my students to develop a lifelong interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and bringing current technology into the classroom would help make that a reality.
My students are hardworking young people that come largely from lower-middle class homes.
My students attend an urban middle school and currently do not have sufficient access to 21st century technology in the classroom. I think it would greatly increase interest in science, technology, engineering, and math if my students had better access to technology. I hope that DonorsChoose.org will help me fulfill my dream of creating a 21st century classroom where students can imagine, design, and create.
My Project
Data is everywhere. If you want to navigate the world properly, you need to have a handle on statistics. "Math education is still largely interpreted as a progression through Algebra and Geometry to Calculus. And I’m not against working harder to improve math education. But in terms of things you really need in order to make your way in modern society, statistics is way, way up there, above a lot of things that are currently lodged in the curriculum." -Kevin Carey
I am posting this project because I want to reduce barriers to middle school students learning Statistics by engaging them in authentic data collection and analysis.
This project is inspired by "How Do I Calculate Color?" From Ms. Namowicz, a model project in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation STEAM Innovation Challenge.
I am requesting two different types of thermometers so that students can collect temperature data using different tools. They will then analyze their data and have discussion about accuracy and precision of the different tools. Additionally, I am request scales, protractors, and rulers as additional tools for data collection in student designed experiments. Ultimately, I would like the student to design their own experiments, collect their own data, and then use statistics to present their findings. Through these activities students will discuss measures of central tendency and spread, trend lines, correlations, visual representations of data (such as box plots, histograms, and dot plots), and feel comfortable sharing and discussing their data with their peers.
With these tools, data collection and statistical analysis can take on real world significance.
