This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Now in my sixth year as a teacher for students with special needs, it is absolutely imperative that my students continue to understand the importance of technology as part of 21st century skills. My students are resilient 9th and 10th graders in special day classes with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Due to my upbringing from a low income household, my students resonate with me because they too know what it's like to have the odds stacked against you when trying to obtain higher education. Our school is located in a low income community in South Los Angeles; henceforth, why it's also a Title I school with very limited funding. Graduation rates are unfortunately low, but the students remain diligent young scholars. It's an honor to help them take the proper measures to graduate as this is their final step before entering college! They are resilient, fun, caring, and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them.
My Project
An iPad would be an incredible addition to our classroom full of students with special needs. All of my students have severe language delays and read below grade-level. An iPad with communication apps will open up a whole new world of interaction for my students. Many times at school, the students become frustrated and shut down because they cannot effectively communicate their needs. An iPad will provide an efficient outlet of communication. It will also provide academic learning activities catered to each individual students’ needs. Each student will be able to work on their academic, fine motor and speech goals. Moreover, it will provide a means for them to continue taking assessments to monitor their progress in their IEPs (Individualized Education Plan). The sky is the limit for my students with the help of technology! Lastly, this will serve as the catalyst for the ultimate goal of someday possessing an entire classroom set of iPads. Hopefully, this would be iPad number 2.
