This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced-price lunch. Due to Hurricane Harvey, right now, 100% of our students are receiving two free meals per day. We are also sharing our middle school campus with our sister middle school. Our students are attending school for half of the school day. On top of all of that, a large number of our students homes were devastated by flood waters. In fact, 16 of my 147 are considered homeless. Despite all of the hardship that my students are going through, you would never be able to tell when they come to school. They truly love to learn, and they love their time at school. My students are smart, hard-working, and eager to learn.
I teach the AVID elective course; AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL STUDENTS for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID aims at bringing the student who is in the academic middle, placing them in rigorous, college-preparatory classes, and teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers.
My Project
This year has been... unusual. Four days into our school year, Hurricane Harvey made landfall and changed our lives. Our district was the very last in the Houston area to return back to school... Even then, our campus was damaged, and we had to share our school with our sister middle school whose damage outweighed ours. Just when we thought that we would be going back to normal, we received some crazy winter weather, which forced us to miss two additional days.
During this time, it is especially important that our socio-economically students have access to technology while at school in order to keep them on track with their peers.
The Mac computer will allow my students to collaborate when creating projects, editing videos through iMovie, printing, and provides the ability to use apps. The screen is large enough for several students to work from the same computer. The chairs would be set up at a table so that the computer can be easily accessed by multiple students.
The surge protectors would allow students to charge and plug in different devices at their group tables without having to leave their station. Although in the AVID classroom we preach collaboration, the partitions would allow students to work independently when necessary for testing.
The headphones and storage containers would allow two different classes within the AVID program to have access to quality headphones to use with chromebooks at a time and could travel from class to class when necessary.
These materials would make a tremendous impact on our classroom and provide my students with the twenty-first century skills necessary to be successful in our ever-changing global society.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
