My students need laptops to use age appropriate programs to help them catch up on their phonemic skills so they can maximize their literacy learning and move up reading levels more quickly!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school and it's students, teachers and administrators are amazing! We are in the Morrisania area of the Bronx, NY and life is never easy for our students. The teachers and administration work tirelessly to support our students so that they have an equal playing field outside the school and in their futures.
Because we do such great work we were blessed with a new building and the opportunity to grow our school from a middle school to a middle through high school.
Last year we graduated our first senior class and our graduation rate was 84%. Surpassing the city, state, and country graduation rates.
We work hard with our students when they enter our building in 6th grade. However, with our new expansion we get students entering our school in the 9th grade who have not have the benefit of our rigorous teaching and constant care. To help these students excel at a fast pace so they too can enjoy the rewards of a high school diploma we need some intense interventions. I hope you will joint my school in supporting these amazing students who want nothing else than to succeed like their peers.
My Project
My small class would greatly benefit from Chromebooks for so many reasons. For one, many students have graph motor problems, so using a computer to use free programs to improve typing skills and submit work via typing would be a great benefit to them. Also, many students will benefit from using the Internet to access programs related to improving their reading abilities. When students struggle with reading at an older age, having access to computer programs where they can work on their individual areas of improvement whether it be phonics or short leveled readings, is the best strategy. Students can work at their pace on the skills they are focusing on. Finally, students can benefit from using the computers to listen to audio books, another meaningful way to differentiate their learning. Having five Chromebooks in my small class of ten would definitely help me to differentiate the students skill practice and help them improve their reading and writing skills more quickly!
