Technology for Instruction/Learning

My project needs a LCD projector so students can view math video clips from the internet and so they can view DVD materials.

In a public school, I teach math, reading and writing to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders with special education needs. Our multicultural school population is a high-need at-risk community of learners.

We do have some technology in our school, but we often have to wait weeks to have access to it. Sometimes we have passed the window of learning opportunity by the time we can obtain the needed technology. Our part of the school district is comprised of approximately 49% low income families, and the rest are lower middle class families making ends meet. We are unable to raise funds to support our school and/or classrooms with technology that can make a difference for our learners.

If we had a projector to use with a DVD player and laptop computer it would allow the students to benefit in many ways. A couple of them are listed here. They could view the math tutorials from Math Realms, video clips from the series, NUMBERS, and movie clips. It is good for them to view these things together as a group so I can circulate among the students and check for understanding instead of having to re-teach to each student at each computer. The reading class could be shown how to use the READ 180 program as a whole class, making our use of class time more efficient. They could also view appropriate videos, so they can practice good reading skills through viewing stories.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have more immediate feedback and to have access to great learning sites in a whole group setting. I see this resource as an ongoing benefit to the students, resulting in not only hours of learning opportunities, but years. Young people are very "tuned in" to visual presentation, especially the special needs population that I work with.
