This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Miami Lakes Educational Center is a Technical high school focused on preparing students for college and career. We are in the fourth largest school district in the United States. As a large urban public school system we face numerous challenges obtaining some of the resources required to enhance classroom learning.
We are a Title 1 school with 81% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch.
My students Finance students are utilizing technology to learn about investments. We need your assistance to obtain tablets in the classroom to support learning.
My Project
In order to provide enrichment in Finance classes, I utilize 2 technology simulation programs to teach students about Personal Finance and the Stock Market. The H&R Block Budget Challenge provides real life experiences in managing personal finance. Having a tablet in the classroom will allow students to check the status of their account, pay bills, complete quizzes, and share their success in a timely manner. Additionally, students utilize SIFMA Stock Market Game to buy and sell stocks, bonds and mutual funds. This too is time sensitive and requires students to check their portfolios and market information on a regular basis.
Many of my low income students do not have tablets to complete time sensitive assignments.
Access to this technology will be a step towards closing the digital divide. Having a tablet in the classroom will keep students engaged and up to date with the activities related to managing personal income and expenses and stay abreast of the volatile stock market.
