My Project
One hundred percent of the students at our school are from low-income families and qualify to receive free lunch. Furthermore, our students need our help by providing them with basic school supplies to allow them the opportunity to maximize their learning. Our urban district has just added French as a second option for the middle schoolers at our school. We are the first and only of seven middle schools in the city to offer this option. Many of my students are native Spanish speakers looking to expand their horizons. They're eager learners but need extra support for building their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills gave their various backgrounds and abilities. They deserve a well-rounded opportunity for language learning in spite of limited funding for the subject.
I try to make our French lessons varied and engaging to reach all of my students and to teach them the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in French, as well as francophone culture.
There truly is no substitute for learning by doing, particularly in language learning, as students will be able to interact with each other, compare their own recordings to exemplars and see their own progress with speaking and listening over time.
With these tablets, screen protectors, charging dock, and headphones, students will be able to listen individually to the dialog, music, and other realia in the target language (French) at their own pace. They will also be able to record themselves speaking without interference from classmates speaking simultaneously as well as access language learning apps like Duolingo, Quizlet, Gimkit, and many others to support their learning inside and outside of the classroom.
