My Students
I work in a small school in Little Neck, Queens. It is a very quiet neighborhood and is starting to see growth in the number of families that speak English as another language. I teach ENL to students in grades 1-5 who have just passed the NYSESLAT and current ENL students in grade 5 who have just started school in America. Even though some of the students passed the NYS test that says they are now former ELLs, they still need a lot of support in learning English just like the current ELLs I work with in grade 5.
My school does a lot of STEAM, and besides reading and writing, the ENL students are also definitely interested in exploring language use across different content areas.
They are lively students who also curious learners and researchers, and I would like help them by getting the tools they need so they can explore and research things they are curious to learn about. Technology will also benefit the newcomer ELLs I work with in grade 5 as they can use it as a source to help them understand difficult vocabulary words in English. Home language support is very important to newcomers.
My Project
Access to this technology will help provide the newcomer ELLs in my classroom much needed home language support. At the same time it will allow the ELLs in the higher levels to have the ability to access a variety of different sources that will help them learn about language use across different content areas, such as being able to use the tablet to research about a variety of important historical figures, like Malala Yousafzai.
The newcomer ELLs can also use the google translate app to help them listen to verbal translations of difficult English vocabulary words into their home languages.
