This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology in biology class is moving fast, and my school hasn't been able to keep up. Listening to the news, you hear about DNA, proteins, immunology and biotechnology all the time - but my students don't have any hands-on materials or equipment for studying it. Help move us into the 21st century!

My school is part of a high poverty urban district, with one of the most ethnically diverse communities around.

Almost all of my students are academically capable, with over 95% of the students in our school moving on to college or other post-secondary instruction, and a large percentage of them going into medical, scientific or other highly technical fields. Most of the students will be the first in their families going to college, so they need to be as prepared and experienced as possible for the challenges ahead. Modern biotechnology is all about electrophoresis, PCR and genetic engineering. Without the technology to do those techniques, my students don't have the experiences and understanding of what is necessary to really succeed in college. The tools and technology listed in this request will help them achieve the greatness that is possible in all of them. They just need the opportunity to show how great they can be!

My Project

Being able to use modern bio-technology in a hands-on, practical manner will make a huge difference in all of my students' futures. DNA and protein analysis are enormously important in medical research, from understanding how all life is connected and integrated, to figuring out how to beat the diseases that devastate so many lives. I want my students to see the wonders of genetics, proteonomics, and DNA. The tools in this request will give them the chance to work on DNA and proteins directly. Using this equipment, the students can not only see the genes, but work with them, change them, and see how those changes will affect other organisms. The experience of pulling the DNA out one organism, changing and exponentially multiplying it using PCR, and sticking it into a different organism to see the effects, is priceless. My older students can use the equipment for advanced, independent study on genetics, while my introductory biology students will be learning the basic techniques.

Technology is so important to our current understanding and research in biology.

My students need to see how "real" science is done, and have the practical, hands-on experience of doing the work themselves. The tools and equipment of biotechnology are necessary to be fully successful in modern medicine, biology and biochemical research. Giving my students the chance to use the tools of biotechnology in discovering DNA, proteins and genetic engineering will empower them for the future.
