A typical day in my class consists of learning in a performing arts setting with 1 form of tech-the teacher's PC. Although Bill Gates said, "Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important," I need that tool in our toolbox!
The majority of my students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds with limited to no technology availability outside of the school and limited exposure in our classrooms.
If technology is accessible to my students at home, it is often used as a social media tool and loosely monitored by their parents or guardians. If it is available in our school, it is mostly due to teachers that have received grants in an effort to keep up with today's technology. My students need as many opportunities as possible to keep up with today's technological advancements in a setting that promotes monitored and safe media literacy. The school offers many enriching opportunities on and off campus, but there needs to be more technological advancements in all classrooms, including our performing arts classes, to bridge to the educational gap and best prepare our students for today's competitive global and technological market.
My Project
I have large classes with a variety of needs, interests and learning levels, so integrating iPad minis will enhance media literacy, alleviate teacher work load, differentiate instruction, engage higher level thinking, provide immediate feedback and create a new means of establishing culture within our school. I envision a workstation in the classroom that students may utilize the iPads when they are needing remediation on subject matter or to enrich their learning through creation and analysis. As the teacher I can download a plethora of apps, such as Ballet Lite and Notetracks, to aid in student learning. I can use the iPad minis to record myself demonstrating movements and correct technique, providing lessons, feedback and instructions. The students can record themselves and instantly use apps to edit and enhance the footage, then upload it in a safe setting for me to grade and critique. The students can use the iPad minis during presentations and projects, using apps such as Popplet.
In the present, adding iPad minis to my classroom will increase engagement and enhance learning and instruction.
I will ensure students learn to use the iPad minis, an ever evolving form of technology, appropriately and effectively. This project will improve my classroom, the school, and community by providing our students with a new tool for their toolbox that they need to be better prepared for the future.
