My Students
I teach 6th and 7th grade Science in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I teach 6th and 7th grade. The students I teach are very diverse in learning and background. Many of my students have special needs and some are ENL learners. More than half of my students come from low‑income households.
It is my goal to offer resources that students can have easy access to as I work with them to engage in our Year-Long Essential Question: To what extent can understanding science and scientific principles help us solve problems and make decisions?
My Project
I believe strongly in using technology for educational purposes! Research shows that the use of technology raises achievement. One way is by watching educational clips and practicing computer and word processing skills. With laptops, my students will be better able to meet the needs of increasingly rigorous academic standards and global demands by accessing educational sites for cross-curricular research; Having individualized, self-directed learning experiences using academic programs; Reviewing or extending skill practice using academic programs; Studying topics of personal interest (and finding new interests).
Technology opens up a whole new world of learning possibilities for students.
Though one of the best ways to learn scientific concepts is through direct and raw experiences in nature through which students are exposed to natural processes and cycles in their natural, messy, unpolished state. Sadly, some students do not have natural grounds or surroundings so the only alternative for meaningful science experiences is a prohibitively expensive field trip. This is where technology comes in and where virtual field trips, video resources, digital images, and visual literacy are helpful. Through such technology, students can learn about or visit unique places from their own laptops.
