It is said that technology opens doors and is the way of the future. My students need access to specialized technology that meets their unique needs!
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
Our classroom is equipped with three desktop computers. We have Internet access, interactive math readers, and access to tons of amazing learning tools right at our fingertips through the world wide web! Though we have all of these tools, some of my students do not have the means to access them. Due to fine motor delays, low hand-eye coordination, and attention difficulties, many of my students struggle to use a standard desktop computer. Using a computer mouse is extremely challenging for many of them. I envision a touch-screen computer monitor standing in the gap for my struggling students. It will allow them to participate in technology activities available in a way that is more natural for them - touching the screen!
As a special educator in an inner city school, creativity is often key.
I truly believe that this piece of technology can open doors for my students who cannot currently access our desktop computers. Please help us even the playing field!
