My Students

Technology-enabled learning requires more power! Old laptop batteries fail daily! Our students are learning the technology skills that will be required for success in the 21st Century. By 3rd grade, their comfort with tech tools begins to meld with their natural curiosity and drive to understand.

Step 1: our laptops need new power supplies to hold a charge and keep up with our students for even one full class period, before they can go on to compete in the real world!

Our Pre-K - Third Grade students are encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process–based curriculum. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: English Language Learners and ESL students, students with special needs, and general education students. Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communication materials to parents in 4 home languages: English, Chinese, Spanish and Korean. We are a Title I, New York City Public School where nearly 60% of students qualify for free lunch.

My Project

We desperately need to replace the batteries for our 15" MacBook Pro laptop computers. As you know, rechargeable batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. These old batteries result in seemingly "fully-charged" laptops that drain down unexpectedly and cause a scramble to save work and then share laptops in class. We are requesting 4 replacement batteries for our MacBook laptops to help bring new life to our computers. These will allow our students to keep focused on their learning and maintain individual hands-on experience working on the laptops. This experience is essential for true technology learning and skill development. I am also requesting 4 USB 4GB flash drives for our students to save their work from the laptops. Our laptops are brought into each class for my Tech lessons, so students will use the flash drives to keep copies of their own files. Our students develop presentations, write stories and present book reports using PowerPoint, Word, and iMovie.

Academic expectations have increased and our technology projects aim to help students learn to tie together their knowledge from all discipline areas.

We need to provide basic tech learning blocks via frequent, individual, hands-on computer use for all students, but especially students with special needs and English Language Learners. With your help, these supplies will allow our students to concentrate on their technology-enabled learning and not get distracted by a drained battery or lost file.
