This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Class, class!" "Yes, yes!" These echoes from my classroom as I keep up with 19 active students; each with their own personality, each with their own burdens. Technology is the tool for these students to change their goals and reach higher! With new developed skills comes new opportunities.
My students represent Thailand, Mexico, Haiti, and Puerto Rico.
Over 90% of these children are living in poverty. Their parents work 2 or 3 jobs if they can find it while other parents are absent from their child's life. Behavior is a challenge as many have grown to believe they are unintelligent and playing the role of the bully is cool. Behind their tough expressions are hearts of gold who long to be loved and believed in. Their school is a warm community, however struggles in funding. Academically over half are not reading on grade level, and they are dependent of the school to change their world.
My Project
The biggest challenge these students face in their standardize test, come March, which will determine if they go on to Middle School. This test is online and requires the students to type their responses to the questions. None of my students can type and they have little exposure to computers. The chromebooks will be used to develop their typing skills along will familiarizing them with how to maneuver around an online test platform. The goal is to remove fear from these students to be successful. Finally, the students will develop other 2.0 web skills such as blogging, presentations, video production and much more to build their knowledge in how to use technology as a tool.
This project will develop high self-esteem within those students who have none.
As they develop their skills it will create leaders. Those student who fear tests will be able to be successful. Lastly, it will open doors for students to dream of a world past poverty.
