This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I would describe my scholars as survivors. Not only in the wake of Harvey, but it is just who they are on a daily basis. Some of my scholars’ families lost everything and had to be evacuated from their homes. On top of everything else they experienced during Harvey, our campus had to be relocated to two separate locations 7 miles away from our school, because of extensive damage, however in the wake of all the devastation around them they are excited to be in school. In order to bring some normalcy back into the classroom, I need to reinvent what was lost.
98% of my scholars are at-risk of failing, some are two or more grade levels below.
However, everyday all my scholars are on time and eager to learn. My classroom has a wide range of reading abilities which make it hard to target each scholars’ needs. My scholars need technology to complete research projects and create various other projects.
My Project
My scholars need these iPads for interactive lessons during reading, language and social studies. The iPads will allow my scholars to listen to reading, help with comprehension, pronunciation, research projects and to create various other projects. 70% percent of my scholars are transitional students from Spanish to English and need help with vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The iPads will help make my scholars independent learners and assist them in taking charge of their own learning. This donation will help my scholars stay in engaged while enriching their academic learning experiences.
A majority of my scholars did not have the opportunity to engage with technology outside the classroom before Harvey’s devastation, now only 2% of my scholars will have access to technology outside of the classroom.
My scholars need iPads in the classroom to expose them to technology, that they do not have outside of school.
