This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th through 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% of minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. 25% of our students are currently an English Language Learner. At our school, we have 10% of our population receiving services from our Special Education department. We have students coming from all over the district including many who are also English language learners. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socio-economic levels which means that most students have limited access to technology at home.
Special Education students are some of the students with the greatest needs for finding new ways to access the world.
Many of my students are only able to experience the world through the "eyes" of technology.
My Project
Working in Special Education you quickly learn that data and data collection is essential. I am constantly pushing in with students during general education classes. During this time I work with these students on their classwork, projects, and tests. This means I spend a lot of time collecting observational data and quantitative data. This data is essential for creating effective IEP goals.
Taking data on the go can be tough having a portable way to take data is essential for creating and taking data to update goals.
There are apps that will help make sure all student's data is kept private. The iPad can also be used to show videos to students to fully understand the lessons they are learning. We can also provide students, visual aids, to help them better understand what they are learning.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
