Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Schools are incorporating technology in several ways: tablets, Smart Boards, and iPods. Students, however, also need to learn how to create PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets, and valuable word processing skills to enable them to complete projects in their educational career.
Our school is a suburban elementary located within the second largest school district.
Like many other districts, we are suffering from serious financial problems, so our school was unable to budget for classroom purchases. Our parents qualify for Title 1 services, which means they are considered to be economically disadvantaged. I am unable to ask for donations to pay for books for my class. Donors are the only hope we have for our students to completely access the curriculum in a memorable and meaningful way. My classroom is comprised of a majority Latino population. Many come from single parent homes where some parents work odd hours or double shifts. Despite the challenges faced by my students, both parents and students are determined to succeed and willing to work hard. My students' efforts are evident in much of their work and many are achieving grade level standards.
My Project
Do you remember those old bubble-shaped Apple computers from the 1990's that came in either blue or green? Those were the last computers in my classroom and now they are obsolete. Having Netbook computers and Microsoft Office in the classroom will update our technology.
Technology is an important component of education today. Students can access a plethora of resources using a Netbook computer. They can use data to produce spreadsheets, learn word processing skills, and create PowerPoint presentations with this valuable resource. These are all important tools needed for the remainder of their education to write essays, analyze data, and complete research.
Students can begin to practice this skill in elementary to be better prepared to compete with other students in their future. More affluent students have access to these tools at home but for most of my students, school is the only place where they can have access.
Currently, my students go to our school's computer lab once a week to complete technology-based projects such as PowerPoint presentations and to type their essays.
Having Netbooks, Microsoft Office, and flash drives to save their work will allow them to have access to this valuable resource during their independent time. By having these tools we can begin to create a computer center where students can conduct research and complete their projects without having to leave the classroom.
