This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
These days people can take having Internet access for granted. I only have two computers in my classroom so projects take twice as long to complete due to the unavailability of computers for our classrooms. Having 28 students with only 2 computers makes completing projects no walk in the park.
My school is in a low income neighborhood in Queens.
I have been a classroom teacher for 13 years. Year after year, we receive students fresh from their countries, not speaking a word of English. Let's put technology at their fingertips and see what happens!
My Project
Our student population is not native to the United States of America. Most of the students are from South America and Asia. They are the most eager, sweetest children who have their eyes wide open when it comes to anything new and interesting. I don't want to say all, but most of my students have never even used or seen a laptop computer. More than 75% of my class does not have Internet access. I try to integrate technology into every area of the curriculum. Due to a lack in resources, projects are not completed in a timely fashion. These laptops are really needed.
Just imagine being able to type the word Zebra into Google, being able to view the image and then print to add to your non-fiction book report about Zebras.
Some of us don't have to imagine that because it is our reality. For my students, technology is not at their fingertips. These laptops would put technology in their hands and more of my students would be able to research at one time then ever before. Like I said before, this would be an eye opening experience for all of the children.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
