My Students
My students frequently use and discuss various applications of iPad technology to access the curriculum. However, I have not been able to address these discussions or help my students with them since I do not have access to an iPad or the applications that would most benefit them.
My students are comprised of both accelerated and struggling math students in a small-town community in CT.
Because I work with students with a wide range of abilities, interests and needs, I am constantly looking for challenging, interesting and informative ways for students to learn. In addition, the task of integrating the Common Core State Standards requires innovative approaches to teaching and applying student learning. Students of all abilities love to learn with technology, and it is an important part of their learning to be proficient with the tools that are widely available today.
My Project
My colleagues and students have shown me a wide variety of fun, challenging and instructional apps and puzzles available for the iPad that are relevant to the mathematics curriculum. If I had an iPad, I could connect it to the mimio that is already in my classroom. This would allow for the display and interactivity of the applications if they were to become available. By integrating the iPad with the mimio, all students could participate in the various mathematics applications available. Apps offer many opportunities to explore different ways to approach learning. There are apps that could help build problem-solving strategies for all students. Struggling mathematics students are often reluctant learners. There are high-interest apps that would appeal to and benefit these students.
My students need an iPad because it will provide a wide variety of learning tools and allow for differentiation based on learning styles and abilities.
Students are required to be skilled in the use of technology in order to stay competitive in a dynamic academic environment as well as for future employment.
