This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is such an important building year for children, and I want to make sure literacy is a HUGE part of my curriculum on a daily basis. By the end of the year I want all of my students reading independently, and a challenge is fitting all our activities into my busy day!
My students are all 5-6 year old children.
They are curious and interested in everything! They become excited about a really good storybook, but they are also happy working on the computers. My school is a wonderful place to work, and the principal is very supportive of our creativity and ideas. We suffer from typical public school shortages, but the environment is continuously positive!
My Project
Laptops will allow students to complete their AR tests anywhere in the classroom, or complete iReady lessons in our reading hut center, which makes it more comfortable for certain children. The "Hot Dots" materials I am requesting will be used for enrichment or extra reinforcement in reading. Students will be able to identify sounds using the beginning phonics cards, and eventually answer questions about the story they are reading using these "Hot Dot" pens. It will give them instant gratification when the pen lights up green if they get a correct answer and keep them engaged and interested in the activity and continue with it. The red light tells them they need to choose another answer. They will be able to engage in reading, and the different sets I requested will allow me to reach all students whether they need to learn beginning sounds, or answer questions about a story they have read.
iReady and Ticket to Read are reading programs that differentiate instruction for individual students.
With laptops, students will be able to go on these programs on a daily basis. These programs give my students the intervention and challenges they need to be successful. Several awesome reading programs have been developed, but require computers. We have limited resources, but with this donation, I can continue to integrate technology into my curriculum.
