My Students

My students in a Preschool - 8th grade public Montessori school come from many diverse backgrounds and they have many different learning styles. My class consists of students from both seventh and eighth grade and are the oldest students at the school. We focus on students becoming college ready through academics, collaboration, social engagement, and service learning.

Middle school students thrive to work in groups or teams and collaboration is one of the many things that makes middle school unique!

My students thrive when I allow them to work in collaborative groups and to have many opportunities for movement. If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see students sitting on the floor, at desks, at tables, or on stools at tall tables. You would also notice that the students are often working with a partner or small group using peer-to-peer teaching strategies. Students at this age learn from each other and all students have different strength areas that they can master by helping other students with the same area of study. The students often learn better when being directed by a peer as they feel more comfortable asking questions, answering problems, and thinking aloud.

My Project

My students will be able to choose where to sit while keeping their technology safe. We are a one-to-one classroom which is amazing for learning! The problem that arises is that we often teach and small groups and students have to hold their computer on their labs-- not a safe situation! With the use of these desks, my students will be able to move freely from small group to individual work while staying organized and keeping their computers safe and protected.

The desks will also allow for group collaboration, individual work areas, and a more flexible classroom!

Giving middle school students the power to choose where to sit is one way to ensure success in the classroom.
