Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next, due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Students are having to overcome an enormous gap in their education. First graders are starting out at kindergarten levels and teachers are having to find ways to close the gap while keeping students engaged.
Unfortunately, students are not one-size-fits-all and have unique goals.
Curriculum offers intervention activities, but not for students who are this low. In addition, the intervention work is dull and not engaging.
Students have been "plugged in" for over a year. They have mastered technology and I am hoping to use that to their advantage by offering intervention using educational apps that target specific skills students are missing. These apps will give additional practice for students during centers. Instead of only getting small group instruction for 15 minutes with me, they will be getting an additional 15 minutes per day using these Amazon Fire 7 tablets. That's 75 minutes of extra practice each week. I can find instruction that is effective for individual students rather than expecting them all to learn the same way at the same speed.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
