My Students

My students are part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast community. They have experienced the chaos left by Hurricane Katrina and the harm done to the seafood and tourism industry brought on by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Though not a wealthy area, the coastal communities have a long legacy of hardwork and endurance that has sustained this area through so many trials.

My students must continue in this legacy by not passively getting a public education but participating and thriving within the best educational instruction and technology available.High school students today must be prepared for both college and career.

Both groups of students must be proficient with modern technology and software, along with the ability to communicate their ideas via these mediums.

My Project

The majority of written communication today is done electronically, yet not every student has access to a laptop to use with their academic written compositions. It is my goal to obtain a class set of laptops, so I can teach my students how to use document sharing and publishing software. Students will also type all compositions on a laptop. Research based rhetorical essays are essential to developing critical thinking skills and evaluating credible source material, and a laptop must be used in this process.If students can develop proficient writing and communication skills within my English class, these skills will also improve their performance in other classes.
