Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a third year teacher in a low income, high poverty stricken area, my students are faced with many challenges every day, both inside and outside of the classroom. My school serves about 800 students; this number is steadily rising. My students come to school every day because they know it is safe and they will get a hot meal. All of the students who attend there get free breakfast and lunch. Many of them walk to and from school because of how close their houses are.

My school is a Title I school.

Despite all of the issues they face, I am looking to change their outlook on the future with creative, fun, and engaging experiences that make them want to keep coming to school and continue learning all that they can.

My Project

In my classroom, I only have three working, outdated desktop computers that are not always reliable. There have been many times where my students are in the middle of their work and the computers shut off and restart. My students need to be able to access reliable, updated technology to better prepare them for their futures.

Technology is used every day in my classroom during reading and math centers.

Center time in my classroom is vital. During this center time I always have one group of students who is at the technology center. At this center, the students get on district-approved online programs that can help them practice the skills they've learned in both reading and math.

My students go on one reading program and two different math programs. The reading program that my students will be using is called iReady Reading. iReady Reading is aligned with our state standards to help prepare them for the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). We have two different math programs as well. One math program is iReady Math, which again aligns with our state standards to help prepare the students for the FSA. The other math program is ST Math. ST Math allows the students to practice the current math skills we are working on in class.

With the three iPads I am wanting to get for my classroom, my students will be able to use these three programs effectively and efficiently. We are required to have all of our students use each of these programs for a minimum of 45 minutes a week. This is extremely difficult to accomplish with only three working desktop computers in a classroom of 18 students.
