This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I school district is in a high-risk community where most students are a minority and low-income. I teach middle school theater and speech grades 6 - 8. We offer classes in basic performing skills, acting, technical theater, and play production. We also have a large extracurricular program which produces two plays, a competitive speech team, improv, and participates in the International Thespian Society.
Though our drama students struggle at times to succeed, they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment.
My Project
Our technical theater class spends the entire quarter learning to design for a play including costumes, props, lighting, sound, makeup, and hair. One area where we lack proper equipment to throughout explore technical theater is lighting. Right now, there is only one light board, making it too difficult to give all the students a "hands on" lighting experience. If our class had several light boards to use for their designs, they could get a hands-on experience in theatrical lighting. With more light boards, my students would have time to delve deep into lighting and create looks that are appropriate for their plays.
