Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Speech-Langauge pathologist in a low-income school district my students are faced with challenges in and out of the classroom. They thrive in situations that are consistent, allow them to succeed, and provide the opportunity for them to shine.

My students are a tapestry of experiences, strengths, and needs.

They require specialized instruction to access the general education curriculum. At our elementary school, we believe in providing learning through various functional formats that will prepare them for graduation, citizenship, and careers.

My Project

Several of my students require assistance to participate in games with peers and to play with toys. These unique technology items, such as toys and interrupters provide them the tools to gain independence, build social skills, and make friends.

The project provides independence, creativity, and knowledge through play.

You are helping a child accomplish goals and to play with peers. You are helping to reduce the frustration that frequently exists, by not being able to interact with the world around them. This project will provide access to functional and critical learning, that also serves as the building block for higher levels of communication. Even students who are not directly using the items are impacted by this project, as it allows them to interact with their peers, understand their ideas, and work together in ways they previously could not. This is a unique way of looking at technology as a means of enabling students of all abilities to interact.

The magnetic blocks allow students with motor planning goals to build a project without worrying about knocking down what they already built, the pop pop piano allows students to participate in music activities, the kitchen toys allow students with motor and language goals to have control over the pretend play scheme through them making creations for their peers rather than waiting for their peers to provide them toys, the interrupters allow battery operated toys to become operated by a switch and therefore allow all students to control the activity. Many students with motor and language goals have to wait for a peer or adult to assist them in socializing, but with toys, such as spinning wand or dog chasing game they can participate independently. Lastly, the light up blocks allow students with visual impairments to become more engaged in creative building.
