My Students

Imagine what it would be like to have an amazing idea to share but the words come out in the wrong order, or by the time you finish writing the first word, your idea is completely lost. This is what some of my students struggle to overcome everyday, with every writing assignment.

Many of the students in my second grade inclusion class have special needs and are learning English for the first time.

They live in a very low income urban area and attend a Title I school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not have books at home and do not have the means to obtain crucial literacy supports such as those offered though technology. Many of my students' parents are not literate so in most cases, the only reading and writing supports my students get are at school. Two thirds of my students do not have access to computers at home and none have access to assistive technology that offers the support they need to facilitate the completion of writing assignments. My school does not have a budget to provide supports, tools, or technology for students who have special needs or who are learning English for the first time. We do not even have a writing curriculum, let alone one that is differentiated to suit specific developmental needs.

My Project

Some of my students have been diagnosed with autism and struggle to filter sounds and regulate their attention. This struggle makes writing a difficult subject for them because any noise, movement, or other distraction can cause them to 'get lost' in making sense of this sensory input and completely lose track of the task at hand. By providing them with noise-muffling headphones, students can spend more time writing and less time filtering classroom sounds. My students are very bright and creative but have great difficulty organizing and articulating their ideas. When they harness their focus on one thing, such as letter formation or the correct way to hold a pencil, they often have a hard time remembering exactly what it is they wanted to write when they began the sentence. Digital voice recorders will allow students to verbally brainstorm and then play back their ideas, one sentence at a time, to write down for any given writing or reading response assignment.

Your gift will give my students who have disabilities and who are learning English for the first time, the ability to transfer their inspiring thoughts and creative ideas from their minds to their papers.

These tools can help level the playing field and support my students in becoming the journalists, authors, and teachers they aspire to be. They need this assistive technology to serve as the extra boost that acknowledges their challenges and helps them to be better writers in spite of them.
