Our occupational therapy department works with students of elementary school age range (5-10). We work with students of different functional abilities and needs. Our students are special because they are driven to learn and are always looking to explore their environment to aid in the learning process.
Our students are motivated by the success they achieve, and I find the process of helping the students achieve their goals rewarding.
Just seeing the smiles on their faces makes the work day so much better.
The students that we serve come from a low income community on Staten Island. They face many environmental challenges that limit early exposure to a well rounded, multi-sensory educational experience. It is my job to ensure that once they come to school they have everything they need to succeed!
My Project
As an occupational therapist in one of NYC's high-needs schools, I encounter struggling students on a daily basis. My children not only experience an environmental disadvantage, but often physical, mental, and emotional disadvantages as well.
Many do not have access to computers, tablets, or even developmentally appropriate toys at home.
They come to school having had limited exposure to these things and thus are limited in their development.
It is my role in the school to help them overcome any hurdles that they face when trying to be successful in their classrooms. With diagnoses such as ADHD, autism, language impairments, and learning disabilities the hurdles are high and numerous.
With iPads available my students will be able to access various educational and therapeutic apps to help them catch up with their non-disabled peers. In addition we all know how motivating technology is to all children regardless of their functional ability.
My students will not only benefit educationally from your donation, but will also have access to something they love and otherwise may never experience.
