Tech Makes Foreign Language Learning Fun

My Students

Our school is an amazing place. We are among the top 10% of Seattle Schools for student academic growth per student per year. Our students overcome all kinds of obstacles, including poverty, racism, and learning English (the majority of our families don't speak English at home). It's an amazing school, and I am grateful every day for getting to be a tiny part of it.

I teach beginning middle school Spanish.

This is a high school class and gives students a chance to get a head start on high school credit and requirements.

My Project

Do you enjoy memorizing vocabulary lists? I sure don't, and neither do my students. But a beginning foreign language class requires a ton of memorizing.

In this project, I'm asking for a set of tablets so that we can do DuoLingo and also play online quiz games to review vocab and grammar, like Quizlet and Gimkit.

The more I can turn memorizing into fun games, the more kids will enjoy learning. I need my students to spend a lot of time memorizing stuff, but if I can make it fun, they don't mind doing the work! I'm all about the fun activities and games in my class!

Also, because such a high portion of our students live in poverty, I feel like it's important to make sure all our kids have access to technology at school.
