My students need access to technology. I have students that are limited with their verbal skills and would benefit from so many online programs and applications. Other students want to learn how to be computer engineers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are my family. We together, laugh, cry, sweat, and cherish the moments we spend in our classroom. Its not much, a white board, a few tables, and chairs (mostly furniture brought in from my own home). My students range from ages 5 through 15. These kids are the ones who have learned to "find your buttons", they challenge you, they love to learn, theyre sponges (with everything). They hare able to do so much but are limited... they ask me "when can I learn how to create a blog? A website? A podcast?" My answer is always seemingly hopeful with "maybe we can get help and get donations?" I want to be able to come back to them and say "you know how you wanted to learn Javascript, well now you can!". But... we need your help.
My Project
Our students in our low income school district have these big dreams! They want to be engineers, computer programmers, doctors, scientists. They know they need these important 21st century computer skills in order to be ready for this ever changing and advancing technology work force! They don't have computers at home. Some students have to do research on their families phone (some families, 10 people per house share ONE phone with internet).
I want to provide my students with the opportunity many other students in more affluent areas have.
I want them to feel like the playing field is leveled. I want them to have dreams of going into college because they know they are TRULY ready. I want to help them achieve their dreams... not just a high score on a reading test. I want them to follow their passions and to be good at it! I need them to feel they can succeed. That is why in my classroom we are implementing Genius Hour.
Genius Hour is a time in the classroom that is spent pursuing passions. Students will identify their passions, develop high level questions on how to be successful in attaining a certain goal, will work with experts in their fields, and hopefully start working on their dreams (who says you have to wait until college)?
These Chromebooks will help Jimmieaka download the software it takes to learn how to create online animations. She will be able to contact professors or other experts from the computer animation field when she writes them an email. She will be able to post her progress on her google site or blog. She will use this computer to develop essential skills in Microsoft office programs.
I have so many other students, like Jimmieaka, can you help them develop their passions?
