Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students represent countries such as Bangladesh, El Salvador, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, the Philippines, South Korea, and the United States. They speak a myriad of languages and work hard every day in order to be academically successful, go to college, and make their families proud.

My high school students are the next generation of educators, doctors, scientists, innovators, and future leaders who are the most resilient, self-directed, and passionate learners.

Over 85% of our student population is of low income, and over 90% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Some live in one-bedroom apartments with a family of five. Others work all weekend to help their parents pay the rent. Still others are in foster care. They access computers at school and the Internet at the library, as many do not have access at home. Yet in order to remain competitive in college and in the workforce, they are expected to be fluent in the most up-to-date technology.

My Project

Remote learning has been very challenging for teachers, students, and families. With a hybrid (remotely and in person) model of teaching, it is my hope to use a variety of digital platforms to design engaging lessons that can be completed on any platform

Teachers lack quality technology to provide engaging and meaningful instruction and lessons to students.

We are currently using laptops that are out of date, don't hold charges, and can't support platforms that are being used for distance learning. Students will benefit from this technology because I will be able to provide more enhanced pre-recorded videos and detailed instructional documents such as complex presentations and weekly plans. I intend to provide students with quality, synchronous meetings over Zoom that include audio, videos, and games, but this requires technology that can multi-task. Older devices have trouble managing all the open applications and often overheat and crash.

I also intend to create asynchronous lessons and activities using various platforms. Using this technology will help create those lessons by also having bigger screen to allow multi-tasking while teaching and planning which will reduce the need to have a second monitor and/or device. Providing this improved technology will eliminate a lot of issues and give me peace of mind when creating quality lesson plans, videos, and audios that need to be saved on the computer.
