Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning five. Currently, we are distance learning. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting, and it is anything but typical! Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their children's breakfast and lunch. The parents are very supportive, and they enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories, and learning new things. We are a very diverse community, with over 20 languages spoken.
Our school is a high-poverty Title I school with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics, and sight words. We study science and math. Distance learning during the pandemic consists of live, online instruction on Zoom and using iPad apps and websites. This is very difficult for four-year-olds who can’t even sit through a movie!
My Project
One item in this request is an Apple Pencil to use with our iPads. With the Apple Pencil, we will be able to practice writing on the tablets, just as if we were writing on paper. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to purchase these items ourselves, so we are asking for support in providing them.
The Apple Pencil feels just like a real pencil in your hand, which will help the students transfer writing skills from iPad to paper, and back again.
We are also requesting water to keep us hydrated, as well as sweets to keep children motivated and awake during class.
We have been learning remotely all year, and some students will soon be back in the classroom. However, we will continue to utilize technology and online resources for learning. Your help will be greatly appreciated!
