Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The only people who never fail are the ones who never try." Students must never give up on becoming better readers.
My students are high school Special Day Class students.
They have a Specific Learning Disability and they read below a 4th grade level. These students have a low outlook on life because they feel they will never be able to get a high paying job or go to college. We are a public school located in an impoverished section of the city. Most of my students have never finished reading a novel. I am hoping that after they finish reading Tears of a Tiger, they will discover the joy of reading.
My Project
My students will benefit from reading a novel that they can relate to. The most effective way for students to improve their reading is by reading daily. I have the novel recorded on tape and I will use the recording to have the students listen to modeled reading. The novel resources will help the students analyze the story and give them an more in depth perspective on the struggles of people with suicidal tendencies.
My students will undoubtedly become engaged in this story, as it relates to their personal lives.
Most of these students come from broken homes. They will be able to relate to the main character as he struggles with very similar issues. I am hoping that after reading this novel, students' reading level will increase by at least 5 points on the DRP assessment.
